Australia : ACT starts second wind farm auction process

Publish Date : 10-Aug-2015

ACTs Environment Minister Simon Corbell stated that the ACT Government has started the second round of its wind farm power procurement auction.

According to Corbell, this auction is aimed at offering another 200 megawatts of wind power from at least two new projects.

Now was a good time to launch the auction due to favourable market conditions that would allow the government to secure competitive pricing, he noted.

The market for wind farm power purchase agreements is lacking buyer interest, however this will be boast in the next few months as retailers face a looming shortfall of renewable energy certificates to meet their legal liability under the Renewable Energy Target.

There's no doubt that if we were to wait until next year we would see potentially less competitive projects coming into the mix, said Corbell.

In addition, the government said that the criteria for evaluating project selection had been "refined" to make it clearer how they would evaluate the extent to which bidders made an economic contribution to the ACT region.

Projects were chosen in Victoria and South Australia over the last auction round, even though there were several bidders offering to build wind farms nearby to the ACT. Some of these bidders have told Climate Spectator that if they had better understood the governments priorities they would have bid in wind farm projects further afield with better wind speeds and hence lower costs than those nearer to the ACT.
