Sri Lanka : SRI LANKA plans to introduce issuing biometric passports

The Government of Sri Lanka announced that it has determined to obtain fingerprints as biometric data of applicants when issuing Passports.

The government is planning to start in the process to issue biometric passports according to international standards with effect from 10th August 2015.

According to Immigration and Emigration Controller, General Nihal Ranasinghe, the new system has a high accuracy rate with the introduction of finger prints to authenticate identity. As the fingerprints should be captured, all applicants should come in person to the Head Office of the Department or regional Offices to submit their passport applications.

Printed photographs of the applicants will not be accepted by the Department. In addition, arrangements have been made to obtain photographs of the applicants, assuring to standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

All applicants have to get their photographs only from studios approved by the Department situated island-wide or from studios developed at the Head Office and Regional Offices of the Department.

Sri Lankan Passport will become a travel document with international recognition with this arrangement.

According to the official, the process helps to make easy the present system and avoid the shortcomings prevailing in the present method. The old passport will not be cancelled although the issuing of new passports will start tomorrow.
