Philippines : SENATOR calls for creation of procurement unit in PNP
Publish Date : 14-Aug-2015
SENATOR Joseph Victor Ejercito called Thursday for the creation of a procurement unit in the Philippine National Police (PNP) to accelerate the process of buying equipment for the 150,000-strong police force.
At the restart of the hearing on the PNP modernization program, PNP chief Director General Ricardo Marquez said the agency wants to have its own procurement unit to address delays in procurement process.
Ejercito then assured support to Marquez and asked him to present the Senate with a copy of the police agency's wish list.
Ejercito said, "A separate PNP procurement service should solve the problem of our police not getting the equipment support they need. What's happening now is that the agency just accepts what will be given to them even if the procured equipment is brand-used."
Ejercito also noted the need to provide helicopters to the police force.
The senator said, "How can we imagine our PNP not having an eye in the sky PNP's need for helicopters is not a luxury but a necessity to expand their interoperability and capacity to respond, especially when there are disasters."
