Egypt,Russian Federation : EGYPT, RUSSIA to sign nuclear plant contracts

Publish Date : 17-Aug-2015

By the end of the month contracts would be signed with Russia's state-owned nuclear power giant Rosatom to construct an eight-reactor nuclear power plant in the country, said Government officials in Egypt.

Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be signing the contracts, which calls for eight 1,200 MW reactors with Russia building the first four, while the next four would be offered for an international tender.

Decades earlier, the site of the plant was determined, before the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster of April 1986, which derailed the first attempt of constructing a nuclear power plant in Egypt.

In 1981, the site in the Matrouh region on the Mediterranean coast in an area known as Dabaa was selected.

The 55-square kilometers site for the plant is around 184 miles northwest of Cairo.
