Philippines : NAPOCOR awarded generator set procurement contracts to power off-grid areas in the countryside

Publish Date : 18-Aug-2015

National Power Corporation (Napocor) has granted contracts worth P204.9 million to private suppliers of generator sets (gensets) for the procurement of 59 gensets to provide electricity covering a range of off-grid areas across the Philippines. The state-run company has awarded these contracts to fuel socio- economic growth in the countryside. The Napocor President Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita has revealed that the 59 gensets will facilitate delivery of an additional capacity of 11.28 megawatts (MW) for the targeted off-grid areas across the country.

According to Sta. Rita, Napocor has decided to provide these gensets to 52 small power utilities group (SPUG) plants in order to enhance the dependability of energy supply in these remote villages, which are still to be connected with the main power grid. She added, Napocor continues to be proactive in bringing electricity to more far-flung areas and in upgrading our services to our 291 SPUG plants across the country.

Sta. Rita has further said that she hopes that the project will not only strengthen the economic capability of the off-grid communities in an efficient manner, but will ascertain the infrastructure and program support crucial for tourism and countryside development as well. According to a previous statement of Napocor, construction work on the new SPUG plants in Calaguas Island in Camarines Norte and Camandag Island in Western Samar has already been started.

The Napocor President has also revealed that bidding process for an additional lot of 90 gensets meant for another 55 SPUG plants is currently going on. The projects in SPUG areas for capacity expansion and infrastructure development, which form component of the Aquino administrations rural electrification program to promote inclusive growth throughout the country, are the only parts of the Napocor budget backed by the national government.

The internally generated funds of Napocor will shoulder all other operational expenditures of the corporation. The company is now involved in the implementation of different projects across transmission lines and substation segments. Napocor is also in-charge of the management of the transmission systems of the Catanduanes, Masbate, Marinduque, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro provinces.

While transmission line renovation work in Occidental Mindoro covering 155.7 circuit-kilometers is going on in full swing, the work to set up 155.7 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines and 10 megavolt-amperes substation have also been started.
