Oman : BY 2020 OMAN power demand expected to grow 11% per year

Publish Date : 25-Aug-2015

Electricity sector in Oman would likely witness new developments which will contribute towards addressing the growing demand for power, which currently grows ten cent per annum and expected to rise to 11 per cent by 2020.

Earlier during this year, Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) had announced plans to introduce new arrangements for power and water through independent producers. These arrangements covers launch of an energy market in 2017 during expiry of long-term contracts signed with power plants. The new system will be operated in parallel with the existing system.

Additionally, the new arrangements will feature a more flexible approach to conclude new agreements for the purchase of power by OPWP in-order to boost competition among existing and new plants.
In 2014, the sultanate's electricity production grew by 9.6 per cent attaining 28,700GWh as against 26,200GWh in 2013.

OPWP expects increase of the peak demand for electricity from the main grid from 5,886MW in 2015 to about 9,133MW in 2020; an average annual growth of 11 per cent. Currently, the sultanates plants produce 7,594MW of power, after the 2,000MW Sur power plant in South Sharqiyah entered into operations early this year.
