India : Jayalalithaa opens 20th government medical college in State, first in Chennai

On Monday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa opened the 20th government medical college in the State and the first in Chennai after 1960.
Sited in the Omandurar Government Estate, it has been established at a cost of Rs 200 crore and procurement of medicines worth Rs 12.24 crore for the hospital is ongoing.
The CM opened the new hospital through video conferencing at the Secretariat. The city has three other government medical colleges which include Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College.
As many as 410 posts, which includes those for professors, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, have been created in the hospital and all of them have been appointed. According to the Medical Council of Indias approval, admission of 100 students in the college has been completed.
When the AIADMK government assumed office in May 2011, there were 1,945 seats for medical studies and due to various steps taken by the Chief Minister, it has gone up to 2,655 seats during the past four years.
