Reliance Jio has signed deals with Chinese handset makers ZTE, Alcatel OneTouch (TCL Communications), Huawei, CK-Telecom and Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment-owned K-Touch brand for procurement of smartphones for the company's consumer electronics brand, ReConnect, which will sell 4G handsets across India.
Company executives at the handset makers Devices said that under the ReConnect brand will be priced between Rs 4,000 and Rs 25,000. Jio has said it would ensure availability of under-Rs 5000 4G smartphones coinciding with its services launch. Jio had committed that if there was any gap between demand and supply of smartphones at a particular price level, it could bridge the gap with its own brand under Reliance Retail.
Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio has by now placed an order for approximately 5 million smartphones with these vendors and some others including contract manufacturer CK-Telecom, which has got the biggest share of the order. Under the partnership with Jio, companies like Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel OneTouch will in addition offer dongles, routers and other broadband products aimed at homes and small office or home office customers, the people said.
China's TCL Communication that sells devices under Alcatel One Touch brand will be providing Jio with smartphones with 5-inch and above display size that will be priced reasonably for the telco's future customers in India. The handset maker has been supplying 2G- and 3G-enabled handsets to Idea Cellular and MTS India. TCL Communications anticipates majority of it sales to come from Reliance Jio partnership once it launches its services and consumer electronics brand in the country.
Reliance Jio, is working hard to create a complete ecosystem around its soon to be launched 4G LTE networks. The company has in addition been involved with approximately 30handset vendors for the testing purposes already.
