United Arab Emirates : DP WORLD to embark on major renewable power project; tender launched
Publish Date : 19-Sep-2015
Dubai port operator DP World has announced that it will embark on a major renewable power project with the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on buildings to produce power. Launched in collaboration with Economic Zones World, a DP World arm, the project, involves rooftop solar panel mountings on its Jebel Ali free zone buildings, parking sheds, and several of its cruise terminal buildings in Port Rashid.
The move will enable the company to reduce its carbon footprint while supplying surplus power to the national grid. A tender has already been released for the project and supplier bids will be accepted until 1st October, with a final deal expected to be signed by the end of next month.
The project will be executed in phases and will contribute to a total production of 30-40MWP (Mega Watt Peak). DP World said it would roll out the program across its global portfolio in the future. The announcement marks the launch of the global "Go Green" campaign, a maritime industry program nvolving five of the worlds largest port operators.
The launch complements Dubai's effort of diversifying energy resources in line with Dubai vision 2021 and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, which aims to decrease power demand by 30 percent by 2030 and diversify the energy mix.
Chairman of DP World, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, said: "This project... is a major milestone in promoting the rational use of natural resources and creating innovative solutions that replace traditional energy sources. We are delighted to contribute to the efforts that support the emirates economic growth and the drive to build a green economy."
