China : NEW deals inked by Indonesia with China after high-speed rail bid rejected

Publish Date : 22-Sep-2015

China's infrastructure investment in Indonesia has not stopped regardless of the failure of Beijing's bid for a high-speed rail construction project in the country, evidenced by the reality that the two countries have inked a memorandum of understanding on power station construction and electricity cooperation.

Shen Danyang, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, declared the new deals and said that the Chinese side felt sorry that its high-speed rail bid was rejected.

The Indonesian government declared earlier this month that it had agreed to reject proposals from both China and Japan to build a high-speed rail connecting Jakarta and Bandung because the plans were not in line with "national conditions."

Instead of constructing a high-speed rail line, Indonesia said it would prefer to build a medium-speed line between the two cities and welcomes China and Japan to present new proposals.

The Ministry of Commerce said that at the end of March China and Indonesia signed an economic cooperation MOU that involves the construction of a coal-fired power station and an electricity grid.

The power supply in Indonesia has for years been not capable to fulfil the demand in the middle of the country's rapid economic development. The Indonesian Ministry of Finance disclosed recently that it will apply for loans from the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for projects aimed at building new power plants and marine transportation facilities.
