United States,Zambia : ZAMBIA working with USAID to develop Feed-in Tariffs for renewable power sector

Publish Date : 26-Sep-2015

The Government of Zambia has reached the last phase of developing a comprehensive feed-in tariff system for projects under the renewable energy segment in the country. For the past one year, the Zambian Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Water Development has been involved for the development of the feed-in tariff program jointly with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Department of Energy and the Energy Regulation Board of Zambia are also playing a vital part in this process. The Zambian Government is positive that the program will facilitate it to boost its electricity procurement of from independent small-scale solar power producers considerably. Although the country is very rich in terms of its renewable energy resources across the wind, solar, and mini hydropower technology spaces, the full exploitation of the same is still to be done.

Zambia has planned the new feed-in tariff program in order to boost the attractiveness of its renewable energy sector for the investors to ensure development of renewable power projects. The solar energy industry of Africa has been successful to attract the attention of numerous global developers and financial institutions, which are willing to make investments into small-scale and utility-scale power projects in the region. Zambia has also made revelation on its ambitious strategy for the expansion of the solar energy capacity of the country.

The Zambian Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Water Development has announced in August this year that the Government will deliver its support to set up new solar energy capacity of 1.2 GW by next August. The Zambian Government has planned to install this capacity so that it can fulfill growing demand for electricity in the nation and cut its reliance on energy imports. Global financial agencies as well as several nations have supported Zambia to develop its solar energy sector.

The country has recently secured debt financing commitment from the World Bank Group arm International Finance Corporation (IFC) for the development of a pair of 50MW solar energy projects. Industrial Development Corporation Zambia will be responsible for developing these two projects. In a bid to seal the demand-supply gap of electricity in Zambia, the country has assigned the 600MW solar power project work to the Corporation.
