India : Govt limits procurement of wheat and rice to PDS requirement
Publish Date : 29-Sep-2015
Subsidy of Rs 25 and Rs 18.50 for each kg of rice and wheat, respectively, is borne by the government, when distributed to poor.
The official wheat and rice procurement this year has been limited to requirements for the public distribution system (PDS) as the government has said it will limit food subsidy within the budget estimate.
As the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has a massive surplus of food grains much above the buffer stocks norm, the government purchased 28.1 million tonne of wheat and 32.1 million tonne of rice this marketing year that ends September 30.
The government requires about 60 million tonne of grains per year to run the PDS programme.
He added, "Any excess purchase could have entailed an additional expenditure for the finance ministry."
