Australia : Tender open for Nhulunbuy Boarding Facility

Publish Date : 15-Oct-2015

The tender is now open for the construction of a new boarding facility in Nhulunbuy. Mr Chandler said the facility will cater for 40 students with provision for a later stage to increase the capacity to 80 students when demand exists.

This boarding facility will ensure Indigenous students from remote and very remote communities have access to quality secondary education provision and are prepared for future opportunities in either employment or further education, Mr Chandler said. The design features six buildings interconnected by walkways and includes two 20 bed residential blocks, a communal facility, an administration centre and housing for the manager and deputy manager.

Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said the Australian Government was pleased to contribute $9.4 million to the $20 million facility. Its a substantial spend, but an investment which keeps higher education open to all is an investment worth making, Mrs Griggs said.

The facility will include single, double and four bed student rooms, a computer centre, music centre, a basketball court, stage and amphitheatre as well as a commercial kitchen, dining facilities and a cyclone shelter.Geographic or cultural Isolation should not prevent young people from getting a quality education.

Mr Chandler said Nhulunbuy High School has been selected as the site for the residential facility because of the large number of potential secondary students in the wider North East Arnhem Land area who enrol at the school.Consultations are ongoing through the Yothu Yindi Foundation which has commissioned a qualified education specialist to facilitate community engagement with the clan groups of the East Arnhem region regarding secondary education and pathway options.

The construction tender is expected to be awarded in January 2016, with the facility to welcome students from January 2017.The Northern Territory and Australian Governments have committed a total of $20 million to building the residential facility at Nhulunbuy High School.
