Turkey : PROPOSED sale of remaining 8GW of thermal/hydro capacity owned by EUAS put on hold

Publish Date : 15-Oct-2015

The proposed sale of the remaining 8GW of thermal and hydro capacity owned by the Turkish electricity EUAS has been presently put on hold citing political and economic uncertainty, revealed a source.

Turkey began an ambitious privatisation programme to sell 16.5GW of capacity, with just over 6GW being already sold currently, and additional 2GW in process of being tendered. Ater the 1 November parliamentary elections, that strategy however looks set to change once a new government is formed.

According to the source, once the process is restarted, emphasis might shift onto EUASs hydro power plants rather than its thermal plants, even though the new timeline is still not set. The source said, For example, there were initial plans to sell [the 320MW thermal power plant] Can, but that has now changed. It wont be privatised.

The Turkish Privatisation Administration (OIB) since 2008, has sold 6,068MW of capacity of which 5,758MW were thermal plants and 310MW hydro plants, fetching $10bn (8.8bn). Further sale includes 2,178MW of gas and hydro capacity until the year end, which OIB insists will be sold, even if the tender deadlines have now changed.

Auctioning of the 1.46GW gas-fired Bursa power plant was expected on Thursday, however now the date has been postponed to 26 November. The 180MW gas-fired Aliaga power plants tender was also postponed from 1 October to 20 November.
