Publish Date : 17-Oct-2015
Telefonica has won the contract for installation and provision of a free and premium Wi-Fi service on all of Spains high-speed AVE trains.
On 16 July, Spain's state-owned rail company Renfe announced the tender. Vodafone had also submitted a bid to provide Wi-Fi on a total of 89 AVE trains.
Renfe plans installation of a free basic service for all passengers and also a 'premium' paid service for higher-capacity connections allowing the streaming of audiovisual content.
The contract is worth nearly EUR 101.85 million for an initial six years, with possibility of further extending it to another four years for additional EUR 46.7 million.
Apart from the Wi-Fi service Telefonica will even install an entertainment platform to be broadcast through in-train displays, that could carry content from its Movistar+ TV platform.
Initial installation of the Wi-Fi service will be on the AVE trains running between Madrid and Barcelona, further to be launched across the whole fleet of high-speed trains over the next two years.
