Australia : Palmerston commuters benefit with major road upgrades

Publish Date : 29-Oct-2015

Works are set to commence on Roystonea Avenue and Temple Terrace with the $9.75 million tender awarded to local contractor Allan King & Sons.Minister for Infrastructure Peter Chandler said the works commencing early November are a milestone in transforming the roads in the ever growing Palmerston region.I love nothing more than seeing our city grow and prosper and bringing new services to our community, Mr Chandler said. It's an exciting time for Palmerston, resident will notice every day how much is going on and how fast our community is growing. As our community grows so too does the need to invest in infrastructure to keep up with our ever changing city. As local member I have lobbied hard to ensure this intersection was upgraded to keep up with this growth.

Member for Drysdale Lia Finocchiaro said this redesign now sees the duplication of Roystonea down to Terry Drive as well as the full duplication of Temple Terrace across to the Stuart Highway.Works will take place in stages with the first to commence at the Roystonea Avenue and Temple Terrace intersection which includes additional turn lanes, upgrading traffic signals, resurfacing pavement, upgrading street lighting, upgrading shared pedestrian and cycleway access and modifications to traffic islands.

Stage two will see upgrades to Roystonea Avenue between Temple Terrace and Terry Drive by extending the dual lanes of Roystonea Avenue to Terry Drive, modifying the intersection and traffic islands at Gurd Street and upgrade street lighting. The final stage includes duplicating Temple Terrace from Roystonea Avenue to the Stuart Highway as well as installing new traffic signals at the intersection of Farrar Boulevard and Toupein Road.

I know regular users will understand why this additional work is required. Good planning needs to not only cater for the here and now, but consider our future growth, Mrs Finocchiaro said. The multi-million dollar project is 100 per cent Northern Territory Government funded and during peak construction, the project will employ over 40 people which will include Indigenous employees and apprentices.
