Chile : CHILE opts for complete 100% Renewable in Power Procurement Auction
Publish Date : 31-Oct-2015
In an auction a week ago to procure 1200 gigawatt-hours of power, wind and solar ventures managed to fully edge out fossil fuels even as the nation gave no subsidies for renewable energy. In the former tender 80% had been given to fossil fuels.
2/3rd of the power under the newest auction will be provided by 2 wind ranches in central Chile with a total deployed limit of 265MW.
The remainder will come from 3 solar ventures.
First Solar through the venture firm SCB II SpA 2 will supply 88GWh under the 20 year deal at US$67-$68 per MWh.
Solarpack will supply 110GWh through a 55MW solar PV venture at US $65/MWh.
And finally, prime solar thermal firm Abengoa will ship 39 GWh at US$97/MWh in 2 overnight blocks through storage of energy accumulated from the sun during daylight hours.
Such a rate for electricity from solar thermal through storage denotes a huge breakthrough, with several energy analysts considering far higher rates for solar thermal-based ventures.
