Jordan : JORDAN announces tender to expand national power grid by 1,000MW
Publish Date : 04-Nov-2015
On Saturday, the Jordanian government announced plans to expand the national power grid, which will make way to implement more renewable energy projects in the Kingdom.
The government had cancelled plans for several solar and wind plants geared at power generation over the past few months, citing limited capacity of the power grid. On Saturday, the government announced a tender to expand the grids capacity by an additional 1,000 megawatts (MW).
The JD100 million project, referred to as the Green Corridor, will help in absorbing power to be generated by renewable energy plants which are being constructed, and soon-to-be operational plants.
The project is funded by the European Investment Bank, French Development Agency and the EUs Neighbourhood Investment Facility. This project strategically supports Jordans strategy to increase reliance on clean and environment-friendly sources of power. Completion of the project is expected in 2018, creating around 1,000 jobs.
As per the national energy strategy, renewable energy projects would likely generate 1,500MW of electricity by 2020.
