Nigeria : NERC approves FIT regulations for renewable power sourced energy

Publish Date : 05-Nov-2015

In a big leap for the country's power industry, the Nigerian government has enacted a milestone regulation to mandate power distribution companies to acquire a minimum percentage of energy from renewable power sources.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) recently passed feed-in tariff (FIT) regulations for renewable power sourced energy. The terms of the regulations require power distribution companies to source at least 50% of their total procurement from renewable power sources.

The NERC has also mandated that the remaining 50% energy would have to be sourced from Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.

It has also defined the projects which would be authorized to sell the 'eligible' renewable power under this mandate.

Power purchased from projects with capacity between 1 MW and 30 MW would be recognized as power from renewable energy. Renewable power projects with capacity exceeding 30 MW would have to meet some additional requirements.

The regulations also include provisions for auction of such large projects.
