Australia : Contract awarded for Marion and Sturt Road intersection

Publish Date : 07-Nov-2015

A South Australian company has won the $3 million contract to upgrade the intersection of Marion and Sturt roads ahead of major works on the North-South Corridor Darlington Upgrade.Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said the Australian and South Australian governments were pleased to announce that York Civil had been awarded the contract.

This important upgrade will reduce travel delays and boost the productive capacity of the local network, Mr Fletcher said.It will also provide an alternate route for road users, helping to streamline the flow of traffic when major construction begins on the $620 million Darlington Upgrade later this year. This is another example of the Australian and South Australian governments working together to deliver on projects which support local jobs and grow the economy.

South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said a local Aboriginal-owned company - ART Services - would conduct traffic management for the works. This has been made possible due to recent changes to the State Governments Aboriginal Business Procurement Policy which has cut red tape and provided a boost for South Australian Aboriginal-owned businesses, Mr Mullighan said.Securing the traffic management contract has not only provided economic opportunities for ART Services, but will also support at least 15 jobs for local Aboriginal jobseekers.

Works are expected to commence in early November 2015 and will involve creating an extra turning lanes on Sturt Road and extending turning lanes on Marion Road. The Australian Government has committed $1.7 billion and the South Australian Government $769 million to deliver the Torrens to Torrens, Darlington and Northern Connector projects on the North South Road Corridor.
