United States : Governor Cuomo Announces State's Purchase of Former Oneida County Airport Property For Emergency Training Center

Publish Date : 16-Nov-2015

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced an agreement to transfer the 1,120 acre Oneida County Airport in Oriskany from the County to the State. The State will use the property to grow and enhance first responder training operations at the New York State Preparedness Training Center.

Our first responders routinely put their health and well-being at risk in order to keep their fellow New Yorkers safe, Governor Cuomo said. This new facility will help ensure they have access to the latest and most up to date training and builds on our commitment to coordinate a more effective and streamlined emergency response at all levels of government. I thank our partners for working together to make this agreement possible.

This announcement follows the Governors successful Capital for a Day initiative in the Mohawk Valley in August. The Governor announced plans to purchase the 1,120 acre Oneida County Airport and expand the center as part of a 31-point agenda to enhance Mohawk Valley communities. A Mohawk Valley Working Group led by the Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito was established to carry out the Capital for a Day 31-point agenda.

Commissioner Destito, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner John Melville, and County Executive Picente were joined today by members of the Governors Mohawk Valley Working Group in Oriskany to sign the agreement. The Oneida County Board of Legislators voted this week to authorize County Executive Picente to sell the property that was previously the Oneida County airport to the State for $10 million. Routine approvals from the New York State Attorney Generals Office and Office of the State Comptroller are required before the deed can be transferred.

New York State Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito said, This state-of-the-art training center continues to play an important role in Governor Cuomos disaster preparedness planning. OGS is proud to play a role in the permanent addition of this property to the training center in Oriskany that will ensure we can continue to offer our first responders the best in training to protect the health and safety of New Yorkers.

Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner (DHSES) Commissioner John P. Melville said, The commitment to purchase the land that houses the NYS Preparedness Training Center facility demonstrates Governor Cuomos commitment to making New York the most prepared state in the nation. The SPTC is a world-class facility and is recognized as one of the premier training facilities for first responders and law enforcement personnel in the country.

State Senator Joseph Griffo said, We are pleased that the New York State Preparedness Training Center continues to grow, and this latest expansion will further enhance the key role the facility plays not only in the security of our state, but nationally as well. The Mohawk Valley is proud to host such an esteemed training center with all the skills and resources that it provides, and this facility will continue to be a very important factor in the positioning and diversification of our regions economy.

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi of Utica said, The New York State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany is already the states premier training and educational center for first responders. Todays announcement ensures that this center can continue to grow and provide state of the art, hands-on training exercises that will greatly improve the responsiveness of our law enforcement personnel. This center is another example of the commitment Governor Cuomo is making to the future of the Mohawk Valley region.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said, I am pleased Oneida County is able to play a role in providing our first responders with a top-notch facility to meet their vitally important training needs. We were excited when the State decided to locate the New York State Preparedness Training Center in the Mohawk Valley and are delighted with the commitment Governor Cuomo has made to train our emergency response teams.
