India : Installment of CCTVs in Mumbai's police stations delayed due to new procurement policy
Publish Date : 18-Nov-2015
The installation of CCTVs in police stations in order to keep track of custodial deaths is being delayed due to the new procurement policy which came in last month but with a few riders that the department is taking time to adjust to.
Bombay high court asked to install CCTVs in police stations in 2014.
The department has already identified 25 sensitive police stations and would prioritize the installation of CCTVs in these police stations.
A senior officer said, "The department has worked out all the details but we have to first meet the conditions of the new procurement policy. Once all the things fall into place we will go ahead with the plan."
According to sources, the department has earmarked an additional budget of Rs16-20 crore to install CCTVs in 90 odd police stations in Mumbai.
The officer added, "If all the police stations are covered, around 500 additional cameras would be required. This would entail extra financial burden of around Rs16-20 crore(Rs7-8 lakh per police station)."
