Hungary : Hungary ready to hold coordination talks with Brussels over EUR12B Paks NPP upgrade project

Publish Date : 20-Nov-2015

The government office chief Janos Lazar has announced that Hungary is prepared to hold coordination discussions with Brussels in the next 2 months over the 12 billion euro project to upgrade the Paks nuclear power plant but will take the issue to court if necessary.

Lasar said this in connection with the European Commission's decision to launch an infringement procedure over related public procurement rules.

Brussels does not have the right to prohibit commercial deals with non-European Union countries like Russia, China or Arab countries,

Speaking on the EC's decision to launch the procedure over the deal in which Russian energy company Rosatom secured the main deal, Lazar said, "It is only natural that there is a lot of pushing and shoving when it comes to a 12 billion euro deal," adding that the issue at hand is a trade dispute and whether EU member countries have access to the money.

He said, Hungary is guaranteeing that Hungarian and other EU businesses can take part in up to 60% of the project and that no other nuclear power development in the EU had been subject to a public tender.

The dispute with the EU will have no affect on Russia's end of the deal. He added, "We will honour our agreement with Russia."
