Australia : Builders shortlisted for MCEC expansion

Publish Date : 19-Dec-2015

The planned expansion of Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is one step closer with a shortlist of potential builders selected.

Leading infrastructure developer Plenary Group has shortlisted three top-tier contractors Brookfield Multiplex, Probuild and Watpac to competitively tender for the 20,000 square metre expansion.

Current expansion designs include additional exhibition space, a 1,100-seat theatre and multi-function space, meeting rooms, a new banquet hall, extra car parking and a hotel to provide additional accommodation in the precinct.

Plenary Group Principal John ORourke said the shortlist will deliver a competitive dynamic that will ultimately benefit Victorians.

We have shortlisted contractors best suited to provide the most competitive tender outcome as part of the States procurement process, Mr ORourke said.

Being a significant investor across the entire South Wharf precinct Plenary is perfectly placed to bring the expansion project to fruition.

MCEC Chief Executive Peter King said the expansion will significantly expand the South Wharf precinct footprint to offer a range of flexible spaces to meet the changing needs of the business events industry.

Melbourne has led the growth of this industry globally for the last decade and this expansion will ensure MCEC retains its position as Australias number one business events destination, Mr King said.

MCEC is working with the Victorian Government and Plenary on final designs to create what will be a fully-integrated precinct that will be the envy of Asia Pacific.

Contractors will be chosen in the coming months with construction expected to begin in the first half of 2016 and the expansion to be opened in 2018.
