United States : Independence Police gets option to employ electronic monitoring devices for offenders

Publish Date : 28-Dec-2015

In a bid to alleviate detention center space and budget challenges, Independence Police has received an option to employ electronic monitoring devices for offenders instead of incarceration.

The City Council voted Monday to revise the city code, which includes such devices and Global Positioning Systems, as ordered by a municipal judge, as equal to confinement. Due to this, removing or damaging a device will be viewed as the same as escaping jail or police custody.

Speaking to the council earlier this month, Major John Cato of the Independence Police Department, said, if the amendment is approved, the department's use of the technology would be "deliberate and slow."

He added,"We'll measure and gauge carefully to monitor the time involved."
