Jordan : NEPCO to float tenders to procure LNG shipments

Publish Date : 31-Dec-2015

Government-owned National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) is slated to float several tenders for the procurement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments in 2016, The companys director general, Abdel Fattah Daradkeh, said, Shell provides Jordan with nearly 80% of its energy needs currently and NEPCO will float a tender to meet the remaining 20 per cent of its LNG needs from global markets.

He said Jordan produced about 80 per cent of its energy needs through LNG after the opening of an LNG terminal in Aqaba in mid 2015, which has allowed the country to start importing LNG for power production and gradually reduce reliance on heavy fuel and diesel.

NEPCO incurred heavy losses over the last five years due to disruption in natural gas supplies from Egypt and relying on costly heavy fuel for power production.

The return to relying on LNG for power production in mid this year is a step that the government considers key to reduce the national power bill and promises a brighter energy future for the country.
