There are reports that the Indian Navy is in preparation to procure a dozen of Utility Seaplane Mark 2 (US-2i) amphibious aircraft from ShinMaywa Industries of Japan. According to the media reports, it is anticipated that the deal for 12 US-2is will be valued at about $1.65bn.
In a move to speed up the export of amphibious search-and-rescue (SAR) aircraft to India, the two countries have already signed agreement. The signing of an agreement between Japan and India related to the transfer of defence equipment and technology co-operation has been accomplished in last month, while the Japanese Premier Minister Shinzo Abe was in India, disclosed sources.
"The agreement provides a framework to enhance defence and security co-operation by making available to each other, defence equipment and technology necessary to implement joint research, development and production," added the sources.
According to the plans, at first India will receive two US-2is from ShinMaywa, while the manufacturing of the rest 10 aircraft will be carried out in the country, as part of technology transfer agreements with a local partner. In a bid to assemble the aircraft in India, the Japanese company has already begun talks with several leading firms of the country, including Mahindra Defence, Hindustan Aeronautics, Tata Aerospace, L&T and Pipavav Defence.
The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force now has about seven operational US-2 amphibious aircraft. Another agreement over security measures for the protection of classified military information has also been signed by the two nations.
