South Africa : Wabtec starts delivery of brake system equipment to Alstom for PRASA railcars
Publish Date : 08-Jan-2016
Wabtec Corp. has started delivering brake system equipment to Alstom, which is making up to 3,600 commuter railcars for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).
The deal with Wabtec covers delivery of brake controls, truck brakes and air generation equipment for 10 six-car trainsets.
Wabtecs says the deal would generate revenues of at least $160 million over a decade.
PRASAs railcar procurement forms part of a program to upgrade and expand its passenger rail system in response to growing ridership.
Every single-level six-car trainset will be capable of carrying over 1,200 passengers and operating at speeds up to 75 mph initially, with future potential 100 mph.
Wabtec and other vendors will boost operations in South Africa significantly to fulfill local-content demand.
