Australia : Tasmanian businesses win more Government contracts

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to supporting Tasmanian companies create more jobs and our Buy Local Policy is a key plank in this strategy. Tasmania has 36,000 small businesses which are the engine room of our economy, employing more than 105,000 Tasmanians. When this sector is confident and successful it helps drive the entire Tasmanian economy.

The latest Government tender data shows our Buy Local Policy is working. During the past 4 quarters (October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015) the number of Tasmanian companies bidding for government tenders increased from 63.11% to 70.09% up from 61% under the previous government. Importantly, when Tasmanian companies have bid for a contract in 92% of these cases contracts have been awarded locally, this represents an increase of more than 9% in 12 months.

The dollar amount of contacts awarded to Tasmanian companies has grown by around 30% representing a total of $186.68 million for the 12-month period.

Numerous forums and workshops have been held around the state to assist hundreds of small business people understand the government tendering process. Additionally, many large contracts have been disaggregated into smaller tenders to make them within the reach of more Tasmanian companies. This is in addition to the implementation of a local benefits test and other job creation incentives. When you support local business, you support local jobs and the Government is proud to be leading by example.
