Australia : EOI for advisers of Aboriginal heritage

Publish Date : 08-Jan-2016

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Peter Collier today announced a call for expressions of interest to join the Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee, the statutory body responsible for the management of Aboriginal heritage across Western Australia.

People with cultural knowledge and authority are being sought to join the committee, in addition to an appropriately qualified individual to fill a specialist anthropologist position.

The functions of the committee include evaluating, on behalf of the community, the importance of places and objects alleged to be associated with Aboriginal people and providing advice to the Minister on Aboriginal heritage matters across the State.

"The Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee plays an important role in the protection of Western Australia's unique Aboriginal heritage," Mr Collier said.

"This is an important call to those who hold knowledge of our Aboriginal heritage. Proposed changes to the way we protect heritage across the State will mean that the committee will be strengthened in the years ahead, acting as an independent voice responsible for evaluating the importance of places and objects alleged to be associated with Aboriginal persons.

"Committee members will be required to provide advice, considering available information on behalf of the entire community.

"I encourage anyone with knowledge or relevant expertise to express their interest."
