Zambia : ZAMBIAS biggest firms intends to increase opportunities for SMEs

Eight of Zambias biggest companies have established a committee to talk about how to increase procurement opportunities for local small and medium-sized suppliers.
Total Zambia and Zambia Breweries, the latter of which is possessed by SABMiller, are among the companies in the southern African country that will develop initiatives to bring buyers and local suppliers as one.
Managed by Zambia Breweries head of procurement Colin Ogilvie, the committee will share information and experiences in good procurement practice both within the corporate sector and across supply chains.
The committee was facilitated by the Business Linkages Programme of the Private Enterprise Programme Zambia (PEPZ), which will in addition support suppliers in improving their capacity to take advantage of procurement opportunities.
A statement from PEPZ read, These companies believe that by working together they can make a significant contribution to growing the Zambian economy and to saving and creating jobs through increased local procurement.
Bayo Akindeinde, team leader at PEPZ, said that the Business Linkages Programmes goal is to establish a model for transnational and national corporations doing business in Zambia to promote targeted local sourcing, matchmaking and local supplier development.
Akindeinde added, Among the initiatives we hope to see [from the committee] is an annual business opportunity fair and workshops focusing purely on local sourcing and matchmaking.
The companies making up the committee are: CFAO, Chibuluma Copper Mines, First Quantum Minerals, Shoprite Zambia, Spar Zambia, Total Zambia, Zambeef and Zambia Breweries.
The Fresh Produce Export Growers Association and the Zambia Development Agency in addition include the committee.
