China : BGP wins bidding of mega geophysical prospecting project in Saudi Arabia

Publish Date : 25-Jan-2016

On January 19, CNPC's affiliate BGP won the bidding of Saudi Aramco's S78 project for large-scale 3D transitional-zone seismic acquisition. The project has an operation period of 9 months + 1 year, with the workload worth USD 340 million. S78 is Saudi Aramco's first 3D survey project in the Red Sea region, where there is no precedent of such projects.

The operation zone features complicated surface and geological conditions due to the coexisting deep water, shallow water, islands and coral reefs. Therefore, extremely high and strict standards are set for the project both in terms of technology and environment. BGP, among a number of world renowned peer companies, eventually won out from multi-round of technical and commercial biddings relying on its optimum technical proposal.

BGP and Saudi Aramco have enjoyed long-term partnership since 1994, when BGP first entered the market of Saudi Arabia and won the bidding of over 20 geophysical prospecting projects from the company since then. In 2012, BGP was awarded the tender of world's largest geophysical prospecting project by Saudi Aramco, i.e. S69/S70/S71, with the contract term of 5+1 years. BGP thereby became the largest geophysical prospecting service provider for Saudi Aramco, taking an over 60% share in Saudi Arabia's geophysical prospecting market.

High operation quality and excellent safety performance have been achieved in executing these projects. Through the years, BGP and Saudi Aramco have been cooperating closely in the R&D and application of cutting-edge geophysical prospecting technologies, especially after the establishment of Saudi Aramco's Beijing R&D Center.
