Fiji : MOU to strengthen agriculture cooperation between Fiji and Philippines

Another milestone was achieved for Fiji when the Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Hon. Inia Seruiratu signed a Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] with Dr. Honorio M. Soriano Jr, the President of Pampanga State Agricultural University [PSAU], Magalang, Pampanga, Philippines.
The signing of the MOU was part of the inauguration of Pampanga State Agricultural University, Magalan, Pampanga and the investiture of Dr. Honorio M. Soriano Jr as the 1st President of the University. After the inauguration ceremony, the Fijian delegation visited research and development projects by the university and dedicated the following agricultural farms:
Charisma Farm, Dragonfruit farm, Feliciano Aquaculture Farm, Guiao Tamarind Farm.
Minister Seruiratu was the keynote speaker at the AgriForum held at the University, where he presented on: An overview of Fijis Agriculture Sector: Challenges and Opportunities.
Under the terms of the MOU the Ministry of Agriculture will be able to use the expertise of PSAU to identify Fijian agricultural products for commercial development and actually assist the private sector in Fiji, to fully develop these for commercial markets in Fiji and overseas.
The Ministry staff will undertake exchange study programs at the university and the university will assist in providing technical expertise in various field of agriculture in Fiji.
Another area provided for under the MOU is the opportunity for Fijian students to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various field of agriculture. This major development will ensure that Fijian expertise in all areas of agriculture is on par with international standards and best practices.
Minister Seruiratu was accompanied by Fijis non-resident Ambassador to the Philippines HE, the Ministry of Agricultures acting deputy secretary Mr Tomasi Tunabuna, the Director Animal Health & Production, Dr. Apaitia Macanawai and Acting Director Research. The visit was facilitated by Dr Ravi Joshi now Visiting Professor at PSAU and a former Consultant at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fiji.
