Tanzania : TANZANIA starts execution of free education policy
Publish Date : 01-Feb-2016
Tanzania has started with the execution of free education policy by issuing a circular on how it is to be implemented from this January.
The government Circular Number 5 of 2015 forms part of implementation of the Education and Training Policy 2014 and realisation of President John Magufuli's commitment of offering free education to Tanzanian children.
According to information, this directive revokes all earlier circulars that were providing for various parents' and guardians' contributions in public schools. The circular states that the provision of free education means pupils or students will not have to pay any fee or other contributions that were being provided by parents or guardians before the release of new circular.
With this move, the government aims at providing an opportunity to children from low income families to gain access to free education along with reducing burden on parents of excessive fees and other contributions.
The free education policy mainly targets children who study at public schools from standard one to secondary schools at ordinary level (Form Four). Prior to the release of a new circular, secondary school students studying in day schools were paying 20,000/- fees while those in boarding schools had to pay 40,000/-.
For the month of January, nearly 18bn was disbursed and distributed to bank accounts of all schools all over the country. The government allotted a total of 137bn supporting implementation of the promised free education.
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, said, the money will mainly cover the first half of the year, January to June 2016.
