Australia : Business community backs NT Governments Buy Local Plan
Publish Date : 08-Feb-2016
The Northern Territory business community has shown it is behind the Governments plan to establish a Local Benefit Advisory Panel (LBAP).
Minister for Business Peter Styles said the LBAP is part of the Country Liberals Governments Buy Local Plan which includes a suite of procurement reforms to assist local businesses to earn a greater percentage of government spending.
We have received over 50 nominations from Territorians for the new LBAP which is an overwhelming response and the best indication yet that the business community is embracing our Buy Local Plan, Mr Styles said.
The call went out late last year for up to 20 individuals, independent of government, to form the LBAP. From the LBAP, teams of three will review and advise on local content and benefits for each tender evaluation over $5 million.
It will enhance transparency of the procurement process and ensure we have all of the relevant information to understand the positive impact each tender would provide locally.
The LBAP is just one component of the Buy Local Plan which is a suite of measures targeting the full procurement and contracting lifecycle.
The Country Liberals Government announced its Buy Local Plan in December last year after consulting widely over many months with local businesses, industry, associations and other stakeholders.
Our Plan will ensure the $3 billion spent annually on goods and services by the Territory Government will deliver the greatest benefits for Territory businesses, our families and our economy, Mr Styles said.
We recognise the important role Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play in the Territory economy, there are 14,280 SMEs registered here, some of which we understand are currently in need of assistance.
As all of the elements of the Buy Local Plan are rolled out across the coming months we expect the benefits to be felt by businesses of all sizes right across the Territory.
