Australia : Tender awarded for Bruce Highway overtaking lanes between Mackay and Proserpine

Publish Date : 17-Feb-2016

Mackay based Vassallo Constructions has been awarded the contract to construct an overtaking lane on the Bruce Highway near Thomsetts Road, south of Proserpine, with work due to begin in March.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the Australian Government's commitment to fully fund the $3 million project will improve safety and efficiency for all motorists on this stretch of highway.

"The Bruce Highway between Mackay and Proserpine is a busy stretch of road, with more than 5,000 vehicles using the road every day," Mr Truss said.

"Overtaking lanes such as this one will help make the journey safer and more efficient, giving motorists more opportunities to safely overtake buses, trucks and caravans."

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the project, which is being delivered a year ahead of schedule, will improve the trip for drivers between Mackay and Proserpine.

"Overtaking lanes are a great way to increase capacity and reduce the risk of head-on collisions and I'm very pleased that works will get underway in coming weeks," Mr Christensen said.

"As well as boosting safety, the fact these works are being delivered by a local company will help support jobs in the region and contribute to north Queensland's economy.

"The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2016 weather permitting."

The $3 million Bruce Highway overtaking lane project is fully funded by the Australian Government.
