The Southern Indian State of Telangana has decided to provide better connectivity in the region, which waited for development since long, through the establishment airport facilities in smaller towns in the State.
The State Government led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has offered its approval for the acquisition of land for the construction of airport facilities close to the Telangana towns of Adilabad, Warangal, Khammam and Nizamabad.
The Government will soon tender these proposals to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for clearance.
Telangana, the newest State in India, has planned to develop the Khammam airport in Kothagudem, while the Warangal airport is slated to come in Mamnoor.
The Government of Telangana has also provided an additional area of 225 acres at Mamnoor in Warangal for the reinstatement of the Nizam-era airport.
The CM, in a bid to accelerate the land acquisition process for the proposed airports, has directed the Infrastructure and Investment Department to work closely with the Central Government related to these airport plans.
He has also requested the Central Government to upgrade the planned Air Force Station in Adilabad to facilitate delivery of civil aviation services, and assured of making provisions for additional land for the same.
The Government has planned to build a greenfield airport in the coal belt town of Kothagudem. It has already identified land of 1,600 acres at Punukuduchelka village in Kothagudem mandal, with an aerial distance of 240-km from the international airport in Hyderabad.
According to the officials, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), adhering to the existing rules, will ask for a pre-feasibility study upon its receipt of proposals from the State Government, while the Indian Government will take the final decision on these airport plans on the basis of these pre-feasibility reports.
Moreover, private consultancy firm RITES Ltd, which was assigned by the State Government to carry out pre-feasibility studies on these airports, has already accomplished its job involving the Kothagudem airport project and concluded that the project is feasible.
An official stated, "Similar studies will be undertaken for other airports also, which would be useful in securing approvals from the centre."
The State Government is very willing to accomplish land acquisition for all airport ventures by one year to be delivered to the civil aviation department to ensure smooth and speedy implementation of the projects.
