United Kingdom : SPT awarded a 200m contract to supply 17 driverless trains & signalling to a consortium
Publish Date : 08-Mar-2016
A consortium between Stadler Bussnang and Ansaldo STS has secured a new contract worth 200m from the Glasgow Subway operator STRATHCLYDE Partnership for Transport (SPT) to deliver 17 driverless trains and signaling systems.
The SPT Chief Executive Mr. Gordon Maclennan stated, "This contract is a key part of our plan to modernise the Subway."
Mr. Maclennan added, "We are all aware of the proud rail history of the Subway as the third oldest in the world and our plans for modernisation will ensure that the Subway continues to be an essential component in the transport network of the future."
The circular line of 10.4km has 1220mm-gauge track, a very limited loading gauge and is electrified at 600V dc third rail.
The dimensions of the new trains will be similar to the existing ones, but the latest fleet will feature four cars rather than three, with open passages between cars to ensure optimal availability of space and to facilitate access to the wheelchair users.
Commuters using wheelchairs will get the Subway access at St Enoch in the city centre and Govan at the new transport junction, construction of which is being carried out now.
There will be deployment of a new automated system to replace the existing signalling equipment, control systems and control centre of the Subway to facilitate convert the train operation mechanism to completely automatic and unmanned one from the semi-automatic system now. The Subway stations will be equipped with half-height platform screen doors.
The new trains are slated to put into service in the year 2020.
The Stadler EVP (Marketing & Sales) Mr. Peter Jenelten revealed, "This project is a major milestone for Stadler."
Mr. Jenelten further said, "It is the first time that Stadler's rolling stock will be part of a driverless underground system."
In a bid to support the Subway upgrading project, the Government of Scotland has decided to offer a maximum of 246m.
