Pakistan : Govt. procures Rs.1 billion land for Diamer Bhasha Dam

Publish Date : 09-Mar-2016

The government has procured a Rs1 billion land from its own resources for the Diamer Bhasha Dam and is expected to start the work by this year's end.

The Ministry of Planning Development and Reforms said no step was taken for water storage, after Tarbella and Mangla dams, and Pakistan now has 30-day capacity and upon completion of the Diamer Bhasha it will reach 90 day.

One of the key power projects of the country, Diamir Bhasha Dam, is likely to be part of Phase II of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project holds great importance key for Pakistan as it would not only produce 4500 MW of power but would also serve as a huge water reservoir for the country.

After 10 years Pakistan is expected to face acute shortage of water and hence to prevent food starvation this project would be developed at any cost.

The government gives the highest priority to Bhasha Dam as a major water crisis is looming in next 5 to 10 years which will be much bigger than energy crisis.

The ground was broken for Diamir Bhasha Dam a gravity dam on the River Indus in Gilgit Baltistan in October 18 2011.

Once completed the dam would be the highest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam in the world.
