Townsville business Bluewater Process Engineering has been awarded the $1.9 million contract to retrofit the supporting pylons of Berth 8/9 at the Port of Townsville.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt said this was a proactive measure to bolster the Ports infrastructure for the future.
Townsville is an economic hub of the North and the Palaszczuk Government will continue investing to ensure this region has the infrastructure it needs to seize future opportunities, Mr Pitt said.
Best of all, this is a local tender which will support local jobs at a time we need it most.
The $1.9 million program of works will repair the concrete columns under the wharf to support Berths 8 and 9 with reinforced concrete jackets to extend their operational life.
Minister for Ports Mark Bailey said there would be no disruptions to shipping operations during the works.
A team of sea divers will start here by cleaning back the 50 year-old-pylons right down to their base in the sea bed, Mr Bailey said.
After the cleaning process, the reinforced steel jackets will be installed around the pylons to allow concrete to be placed below the water level, therefore widening and strengthening the existing column structures.
Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland Coralee ORourke said she was thrilled that this tender had been awarded to a local contractor.
Bluewater Process Engineering is an exceptional local company with the expertise to deliver this work on time and on budget, she said.
Im pleased to see local companies tendering competitively and being rightly recognised for demonstrating the capacity and skill to service big business projects.
Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said this was why it was important to keep Government-owned assets in state hands.
Well have works underway on the Berth 8/9 later this month and we expect it to be done mid-way through next year, Mr Stewart said.
Along with our accelerated works program for Townsville and the 430 jobs that unlocked, this is exactly the kind of investment our city needs right now.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said the Port of Townsville is Northern Australias largest general cargo and container port.
The economic value of our Port cant be underestimated, as the major transport link for agriculture and resource commodities from North Queensland to Asia, Mr Harper said.
The whole Townsville region benefits from the Port and by improving this vital infrastructure, the Palaszczuk Government is investing to grow Townsvilles economy now and in the future.
Founding partner and Managing Director of BPE Mr Eric van Prooije said that he was very pleased that BPE could perform important works for the Port again on such a sizeable project.
Our industry here in North Queensland has been doing it a bit tough recently due to economic pressures so these types of projects that come out of the Port are very encouraging, he said.
Berths 8 and 9 were built in 1957 and these upgrade works will double the expectancy for their operational life span for a fraction of the cost of a new berth.
The modern concretes that have been developed for marine use over the last 15 years are substantially more durable than those that would have been used when Berths 8 and 9 were built back in the 50s.
