Norway : Norway to complete definition phase for new submarine procurement in H1-2016, may consider joint purchase

Publish Date : 14-Mar-2016

Norway is planning to complete the definition stage for the purchase of new submarines in the first half of 2016 and may consider a joint procurement with another country.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defense has entered talks with several different shipyards but is yet to select a supplier for new submarines.

Norway is also in talks with several countries to establish the basis for submarine cooperation.

The country has to replace its 6 Ula-class submarines, which are set to reach their end of life in the 2020s.

In 2015, Norwegian Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide proposed a joint purchase with Poland during her visit to the MSPO exhibition in Kielce. Another prospective partner is Germany.

According to sources, apart from Germany, South Korea, Italy, Sweden, France and Spain qualify as supplier countries.

Germany has had historically close military relations with Norway and a track record of decades-long collaboration in naval construction.

The Norwegian MoD said,"Germany is therefore a nation which it is natural for Norway to discuss a potential future submarine cooperation with. Industry also will play an important part in future submarine cooperation."
