Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia have united forces to explore opportunities for locally-generated aviation biofuel.

Virgin Australia head of sustainability Robert Wood said airline was devoted to increase the development of a sustainable aviation biofuel industry in the province.

He said, "Aviation biofuel offers a significant opportunity for the aviation industry to reduce emissions whilst also building long-term fuel security for the sector."

The airlines have released a request for information (RFI) to the market to tap the chance to procure locally-generated aviation biofuel.

Keen groups have time till May 30 to express an interest.
