Publish Date : 31-Mar-2016

The Government of Bangladesh is all set to officially sign an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract today for the establishment of the Payra coal-fueled power generation plant in Patuakhali.

The Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain has revealed that the Patuakhali facility will have capacity to produce 1,320MW of electricity once it becomes operational in 2019.

The Power Cell official has disclosed that the deal will be inked by the Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd, the State-run North-West Power Generation Company Ltds (NWPGCL) joint venture business with the Chinese Power Company (CMC).

Hossain has revealed that the Government has set a goal of augmenting the countrys energy generation capacity to 34,000MW by 2030 as part of the Power System Master Plan (2010-2030) and to realize this goal, it has decided to develop a number of coal-based power production facilities across the nation.

According to him, access to power is available to 76% of the citizens now and this is due to countrys capacity to produce 14,500MW of electricity.

With funding from the Exim Bank of China, the thermal power plant will be set up as a joint venture initiative, disclosed the officials.

It is expected that the agreement signing ritual will see the presence of the Power, Energy & Mineral Resources Affairs Adviser to the Premier - Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, and the State Minister for the Ministry Nasrul Hamid.

The NWPGCL on March 19, 2015, had inked an agreement with the CMC for the establishment of the $2 billion facility.
