Germany,United States : US ARMY awarded a new contract to HECKLER & KOCH to procure a compact semi-auto sniper system
Publish Date : 05-Apr-2016
The German defense manufacturer Heckler & Koch has been successful to secure a new contract from the U.S. Army to deliver a compact semi-auto sniper system.
The award notice on this contract has been issued on April 1, 2016.
According to the notice, the value of the contract at list prices stands at up to $44.5 million, and the U.S. Army has the option to place a maximum order for 3,643 rifles.
The award notice, however, has refrained from giving additional information on the system.
In its request released in June 2014, the Army invited gun companies to construct a compact version of the M1110 semi-auto sniper rifle. The purpose is to replace the M110 with products that differ from a sniper rifle.
The Army opted for the HK G28 rifle, a 7.62mm rifle that runs on gas. It features a maximum length of 42.6 inches, 13.4 inches in height, and a 16.6-inch barrel length, with a weight of 12.8 pounds.
According to the notice, the U.S. Army will carry out a production qualification test and operational text with the use of 30 units over a two-year phase.
Heckler & Koch GmbH manufactures handguns, military rifles, submachine guns, and grenade launchers to serve the defence sector across the globe.
