Enel Green Power North America (EGPNA) has announced on its commencement of the construction work on the Cimarron Bend wind farm project in Clark County of the US. EGPNA has been setting up the 400MW wind farm with an investment of $610m in Kansas.
Cimarron Bend Wind Project, a subsidiary of EGPNA, will own the project. The farm is believed to be the biggest operational wind energy facility of Enel once it is completed. It is anticipated to start operations in next year.
The Head of Enel Global Renewable Energies Division Francesco Venturini stated, "This project marks a major milestone for Enel, as not only will Cimarron Bend be the largest asset in our portfolio, but it also opens our renewable energy to new partners and uses. "As we continue to invest and grow in the US, we aim to cooperate with companies and partners that share the same vision for a more sustainable future."
The new facility will have annual capacity to produce clean energy of almost 1.8TWh, and the Google along with the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) will procure the output as part of their individual long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).
The wind farm will able to generate enough power to meet the electricity demand of over 149,000 homes per year, as well as reduce about 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The Cimarron Bend will sell a part of its output to a corporate off-taker, becoming the first North American wind farm of Enel to make such move. Enel Group has tapped its internal resources to fund this project. The project is financed through Enel Group's own resources.
The existing wind energy portfolio of EGPNA for Kansas shows that the company is the owner and operator of four wind farms. EGPNA is also the state's number one wind energy sector player, with an overall installed capacity of almost 1GW.
The group has overall designed capacity of over 2.5GW of clean energy spread across 21 states in the US and a pair of provinces in Canada. Out of this, wind power accounts for over 2GW of capacity, followed by hydropower (316MW), geothermal energy (72MW) and solar (29MW).
Recently Enel Green Power Chile (EGPC) has facilitated the 79MW Pampa Norte photovoltaic (PV) solar plant with the grid connectivity.
The project will try to meet power demands of the Chilean Central Region Interconnected System (SIC - Sistema Interconectado Central).
The $150m project comprising over 258,000 polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules has been set up on an area of about 290ha in the Antofagasta Region of Chile.
