India : Pune parivahan mahamandal Ltd proposes procurement of 1,200 buses
Publish Date : 14-Apr-2016
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited has proposed the procurement of 1,200 buses, in a big push for public transport.
While the transport utility will own 700 buses on delayed payment or a long-term loan, private contractors will buy 500 buses.
Mayor Prashant Jagtap said this was decided in a meeting of the board of directors on Monday.
PMPML officials said at least 200 of the 700 buses, will be mini-buses.
The officials added that utility will complete the bus procurement process in 4 to 5 months.
The Pune Municipal Corporation will buy 420 buses, while the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will receive 280 buses.
Raising pollution levels, the city is overrun by private cars and two-wheelers. A strong public transport is required and considered to be a way to reduce stress on the roads.
