Jamaica : $250 million in government allocation to NSWMA to procure garbage trucks

Publish Date : 25-Apr-2016

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has received $250 million in allocation from the Government to procure new garbage trucks. This amount forms part of $255 million provided to the agency in the 2016/17 Estimates of Expenditure now before the House of Representatives.

The balance amount of $5 million will go towards engaging the services of a consultant/firm to support the preparation of a proposal for implementation of an End of Life Tyre Facility to manage the risks caused by discarded tyres at the islands disposal site.

The NSWMA was formed in April 2002 to effectively manage and regulate the collection and disposal of solid waste in Jamaica.

Main objective of the Authority is to safeguard public health and the environment. It does so by ensuring collection of domestic waste, its storage, transportation, recycling and reusing or disposing it in an environmentally sound manner, through public education and enforcement.
