KINGSTON: JAMAICA to strengthen its agricultural sector with CUBAN equipment & technology

The Government of Jamaica has announced plans to procure long-lasting equipment from Cuba, as it tries to reinforce the agricultural industry of the country.
The Government has also said on its move to tap the advanced greenhouse technology of Cuba to support the Jamaican agricultural sector.
J.C. Hutchinson, the Jamaican Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister without portfolio, has disclosed that Cuba offers a huge range of agricultural equipment and this can drive agriculture, here in Jamaica.
He added, We are looking to bring in some small processing machines to help farmers utilise crops that normally go to waste.
He has made these revelations while presenting the keynote address at an exhibition to showcase agricultural devices made by Cuba.
The exhibition demonstrated the capacities, techniques, robustness and efficiency of the equipment that Cuba manufactures.
The Minister has stated that the crops will be used to make juice to be served to the primary school students as part of a breakfast scheme in Jamaica.
He has further said that the Cuban technological solutions will also facilitate hassle-free irrigation facilities for the crops in the country.
Hutchinson added, They have irrigation systems that can help small farmers.
The Minister has stressed that the Cuba provides affordable greenhouses and it has upgraded the agriculture sector of the country significantly and thus we need to look in that direction.
He has emphasized in his keynote address that the agricultural sector is one of the key components of the growth policy of the Jamaican Government, and accordingly, the technological advancement and the increased use of appropriate implements are necessary to stimulate growth and productivity.
Hutchinson has stressed that the Governments one of the key goals for the sector is to increase value-added products in line with the ambition to create a dynamic agro-industry for the country.
