UK awards US$ 77 million to enhance runways and drill new wells in GUYANA

The UK government is providing a 77 million US dollar grant (53 million) to Guyana to upgrade airstrips and drill new wells in the South American country's enormous jungle interior.

Finance Minister Winston Jordan said that the funding is scheduled part of a 432 million US dollar (300m) move from the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Fund to pay for improvement projects in previous British colonies in the province.

The move was launched by Prime Minister David Cameron, a year ago.

Mr Jordan said the grant will aid in repairing many runways that are the sole way to get to few communities on the coast.

The authority likewise said the funds will accelerate access by those communities to drinkable water and will be utilized to construct new roads, bridges and ferry piers.
