PHILADELPHIA gained funds for DNC security worth $43 million

Publish Date : 27-Apr-2016

The City of Philadelphia gained formal confirmation that it will be receiving $43 million from the federal government to secure security expenses amid the Democratic National Convention.

The funds will go towards personnel and overtime expenses and also a range of deliveries ranging from public safety radios to motorcycle helmets and extension cords.

The city likewise seeks to spend half-million dollars on private security to support local law enforcement.

These funds will help us make sure we pull off a successful convention, Brian Abernathy, first deputy managing director, said.

The convention will be held at the Wells Fargo Center with parties and related events all throughout town.

Any operational expense that are not security-pertinent like rendering extra trash pick-ups will be picked up by the taxpayers, Abernathy said.

He doesnt hope that the citys tab will be too much. Although, he does not yet have an evaluated city cost.

Some of the devices will be bought by bidding procedures. Others might be bought by present city contracts.

Were working with procurement to see what needs to be bid on, Abernathy said.

The Department of Justice was hoped to deliver around $50 million in a security grant for the DNC and also more $50 million for the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

In its grant application, Philadelphia had to list out in detail how the funds might be spent.

Only direct security/public safety activities are eligible, city spokesman Mike Dunn. Buying things unnecessarily could put us in a precarious position down the road.
